Mile -8.8, Amicalola Falls State Park, Georgia

Why thru-hike this trail?

This is a question I asked myself a lot lately. It always begins to make my head swirl. Sure, I want to take a break. I want to pursue my hobby to it’s fullest and reach my physical prime. I want to see the best that humanity and the world at large have to offer.

However, I always end up landing on this reason: “why not?”. Let’s be real. It’s there waiting. Life is short, I’m getting older, and I want to do something awesome.

So with that in mind, for the last year I have been going through the motions of physically, mentally, and emotionally preparing for what will be the hardest thing I’ve ever done. My body was elsewhere, but my heart has been drawn out here.

I don’t know much of what lies ahead, other than the mud, rocks, and roots amongst this obstacle course. I think that’s the exciting part. Today begins the journey through the green tunnel.

Catch me outside.

Mile 31.3: Neel’s Gap

I’m just past the 40 mile mark, the first 4000 footer, Blood Mountain, and I’m on to my first resupply.

My wife helped send me off from Amicalola falls, along with my sister who joined me for the first four days on trail. I am so grateful for both of your support, without it I wouldn’t be here typing this now.

The last five days have been spectacular to say the least. I have officially dove head first into trail life, though my mileage is still low. I must give my body time to adjust to this new way of living. I am excited to see what lies ahead as I gain momentum on this journey, but already so appreciative of my experiences the last few days.

My fellow hikers are an amazing, goofy, and supportive bunch. We’re all figuring this out together. I’ve already met more people than names I can remember, but every interaction has had a positive light. Everyone is happy to be here, now.

So far the terrain has been mild, the weather perfect, and the springtime views through the leafless trees are breathtaking. Of course, that’s all bound to change. I can’t wait.
